Understanding neural circuit dynamics of basal ganglia underlying behavioral control

The central goal of our research is to determine the precise circuit mechanisms of basal ganglia that underlie behavioral control. To achieve this goal, we apply an array of modern neuroscience methodologies in behaving animals and investigate basal ganglia circuit dynamics using cell-type-specific optogenetic manipulations, neural population dynamics analysis, photometry, and pharmacological manipulations.

Abnormal behaviors in basal ganglia disorders

Control behaviors are essential in our daily life, and pathological changes in the basal ganglia lead to behavioral alterations in clinical populations. Basal ganglia disorders, including Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, Obsessive-compulsive disorder, show altered behavioral patterns in behavioral inhibition, timing, and behavioral flexibility.
